Don't Be a Target: 9 Hotel Safety Tips for Women Traveling Alone

Are you a single female traveling to an unfamiliar location?

Get the security you need while traveling!

If you are a single female traveler, feeling safe and secure while on your journey should be a priority. Just the other evening while sleeping in my hotel room, an intoxicated person opened my door looking for his mate. This unexpected intrusion made me consider what could have been done to prevent this from happening. To make sure that something like this never happens to you, here are some tips and tricks to ensure that you feel safe when traveling alone as a single female:

  • Hotel staff should not be saying your room number out loud due to the potential of others hearing it, which can compromise your safety . If you notice that your room number has been said out loud and feel others may have heard it, you should discreetly ask for a new room and request that the number be written down instead.

  • Leaving the television on (but not too loudly) can create an illusion that someone is in the room even when they aren’t.

  • Always book as a couple, even if you are traveling solo; simply add someone else's name such as a partner, friend or relative’s name during registration which will add extra security and peace of mind when entering or leaving your hotel room.

  • Check all windows (even those on upper floors) for locks before settling into your room - it’s easier than coming back to discover them unlocked! Make sure to close curtains too for extra privacy and safety.

  • If there is a peephole installed on your door then remember to cover it up with tape or paper for additional security whenever you leave or return to your hotel room; you never know who might be lurking outside!

  • To prevent unknown individuals from discovering that you are not in the room, remove any signs from your door indicating that it has been made up or requesting room service etc., but instead phone reception and make specific requests so they can take cautionary measures when catering towards your needs while still keeping everyone safe!

  • Before entering your hotel room, prop open the door while doing a check of your surroundings; underneath beds, behind curtains - anywhere someone may be hidden or try to break-in unexpectedly - then shut/lock afterwards before settling in!

  • Always use the hotel safe to lock up money, passports, or other valuable things. These safes are not made to be removed, thus keeping your belongings SAFE!!!

  • Finally, make sure that both cell phone service and phone connected inside of your hotel room is working properly – just in case anything untoward happens while away from home!

Although traveling as a single female comes with certain risks, it can also be an incredibly fun and rewarding experience! Taking the precautionary steps outlined above will help you to feel secure in your environment and allow you to enjoy all the amazing things that come with solo travel. Explore new cultures, try new foods, and make memories that will last a lifetime! With just a few extra safety measures, traveling alone as a woman can become an empowering journey of self-discovery that is unlike any other.
